The Crown Season 5 cast. I was fortunate to take my Canadian citizenship oath to Queen Elizabeth II in April 2022. Before the show, I respected her, but I became her fan after watching The Crown. Spoiler alert, Her Majesty passed away on September 8th, 2022. I wrote this post honouring the Queen.
What is The Crown about?
The show tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II’s early reign, starting with her marriage to Prince Philip in 1947. Spanning the next two decades, the show covers significant events in British history, such as the death of King George VI, the Suez Crisis, Princess Margaret’s tumultuous love life, the Margaret Tacher relationship with the Crown and the British People, Prince Charles and the begging of her relationship with Camila Parker and Diana Spencer.
Created and principally written by Peter Morgan and produced by Left Black Pictures and Sony Pictures for Netflix. Morgan developed it from his drama film The Queen and especially his stage play The Audience.
While The Crown is a work of fiction, the writers have done an impressive job of staying true to real-life events. The show has even been praised by royal biographers for its accuracy.
The Crown has been praised for its acting, directing, writing, cinematography, and production values, and has received many awards and nominations. It won all seven drama categories at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards in 2021, becoming the first show to sweep the major drama categories.
Before that, the series was nominated three times for Outstanding Drama Series, while also winning Supporting role for John Lithgow in 2016 for his portrayal of Winston Churchill and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Claire Foy in 2017. It also won best Drama twice at the Golden Globes.
Who are the main actors in the show?

How historically accurate is the show?
The costumes and set design are outstanding. Every episode looks like it could be straight out of a history book, with lush scenery and beautifully designed period clothing. A lot of care ensured every detail was perfect, which helped transport viewers back in time. Olivia Colman, in an interview, said, I only had to put on the wig to become Queen Elizabeth II.
Not all of the inaccuracies in The Crown are intentional. In one scene, Winston Churchill is shown smoking a cigar in his office at 10 Downing Street. In reality, Churchill banned smoking in all government buildings in 1945. However, because cigarette smoke can linger for hours, it’s possible that residual smoke from before the ban was still present in Churchill’s office when the scene was filmed.
The show’s creator, Peter Morgan, has stated that The Crown is not intended to be a strictly factual account of Queen Elizabeth II’s life. Instead, it is meant to explore the Queen’s relationships with her family, friends, and advisers. That said, the show does take some liberties with historical events and timelines.
For example, in the first season of The Crown, Prince Philip is shown meeting Elizabeth for the first time when she is just 13 years old. In reality, they met when Elizabeth was 16 and Philip was 18. The show also presents a somewhat idealized version of their relationship; in fact, Philip was often unfaithful to Elizabeth, and their marriage was not always happy.
However, while The Crown may take some liberties with the truth, it remains mainly faithful to the real-life events that shaped Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. The show accurately portrays critical moments such as Princess Margaret’s affair with Roddy Llewellyn and Prince Charles’ investiture as Prince of Wales. It also does an excellent job of showing Elizabeth’s challenges as both a wife and a mother.
While The Crown is undoubtedly well-made and entertaining, it should not be considered an accurate portrayal of history. If you’re looking for a more accurate portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II’s life, you would be better off reading one of the many biographies about her.
Are there any criticisms of the Crown?
Some viewers have accused the show of being more interested in Drama than accuracy, and while it’s true that the show does take some liberties with the truth, there are also many aspects of the show that are accurate. So, what’s the final verdict? Is The Crown a faithful adaptation of history, or is it another Hollywood drama?
The first thing to understand is that The Crown is a work of fiction; like all works of fiction, it takes some liberties with the truth. For example, Ian Elliot, a former editor of Times Higher Education, has accused the show of misrepresenting Princess Margaret’s relationship with her husband, Lord Snowdon.
In reality, Margaret and Snowdon were separated for several years before their divorce, but in The Crown, they are shown as still being together long after their marriage has ended. Elliot argues that this portrayal suggests that Margaret was somehow at fault for the breakup of her marriage, which is simply not true. However, one scene shows Princess Margaret smoking cannabis while pregnant with her son David. This happened; according to biographer Craig Brown, Princess Margaret was “quite open about her fondness for marijuana.” So while The Crown may not always be 100% accurate, it does provide a reasonably faithful portrayal of actual events.
One of the primary criticisms of The Crown season 4 is that it glosses over many important historical events in favour of focusing on the personal lives of the royal family members. The Falklands War is mentioned only in passing, even though it was a significant event during Queen Elizabeth’s reign.
Another point of criticism is the show’s depiction of Princess Diana. While many people have praised actress Emma Corrin for her performance as Diana, others have accused the show of making her out to be a victim who was mistreated by her husband and mother-in-law. Some viewers have even accused The Crown of trying to repair Prince Charles’ image at Diana’s expense.
Finally, some people have taken issue with the show’s depiction of Prince Philip. While most agree that actor Tobias Menzies does an excellent job in the role, some feel that Philip is shown in too negative light and that his more positive attributes are minimized.
Is the Crown worth watching?
Although it’s a work of fiction, the writers have done an impressive job of staying true to real-life events. Whether you’re interested in British history or enjoy a period drama, you’ll find plenty to like in this award-winning show.
Seasons 4 and 5 are definitely the best yet. I am particularly impressed by Helen Boham Carter and her portrait of Princess Margaret.
